Email: maryellen.sweeney2@va.gov
Primary Research Interest: Internal Medicine
Description of Research: I am curently involved in clinical research investigating reduction of cardiovascular events through risk factor modification. We have been involved in large-scale national and international trials including ALLHAT (hypertension), ACCORD (diabetes and lipids), Navigator(diabetes prevention) and TIDE (diabetes). We are currently involved in the following trials: 1. Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular event reduction in older patients using intensive vs standard blood pressure control (SPRINT); 2. Microvascular and macrovascular event reduction in T2 diabetics following intensive vs standard diabetes, lipid and blood pressure control (ACCORDION); 3. Cardiovascular event reduction in T2 Diabetics using sitagliptin (TECOS) and 4. Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular event reduction in older patients with aspirin therapy (ASPREE).
Relevance to VA: Cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia are common conditions seen in the veteran population and most veterans will suffer from more than one condition. The long-term prevention of cardiovascular disease is particularly important in this population. Clinical trials are needed to establish goals and effective treatments.
