Investigator: Luke Brewster
Phone: (404) 988-8768
Email: lbrewst@emory.edu
Primary Research Interest: Surgery (General)
Description of Research: I collect tissue from ischemic limbs and other limbs that are routinely discarded at amputation. The skin, fat, muscle, and bone are all interrogated with regard to regenerative potential. Cells from this tissue are then stored for testing in novel environments that are meant to rejuvenate them. Using in vitro and animal model in vivo testing, I then demonstrate strategies that show promise for translational therapies
Relevance to VA: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a significant problem for our Veterans. It increases mortality and leads to limb loss. Many times traditional procedures are not able to successfully revascularize a limb. Thus there is a critical need to develop novel therapies that improve function and promote regeneration and healing in these Veterans' limbs. My research focuses on the regenerative potential of the tissue in ischemic limbs, and I test novel adjuncts that may be useful in promoting regeneration.
