Relevance to VA: Non-coronary atherosclerotic vascular disease patients have a high prevalence of concomitant cardiovascular disease and approximately 75% of patients with PAD will ultimately die of cardiovascular causes. This constellation of diseases is managed medically by antiplatelet, statin, and beta-blocker medications as well as endovascular or open surgical procedures depending on indications. Since most of the practice of vascular surgery involves treatment for symptomatic non-coronary atherosclerotic and aneurysmal disease, vascular surgeons are an important group of providers to ensure proper medical care is provided to these patients.
