| Description of Research: |
Dr. Farley spent many years in laboratory research studying molecular mechanisms of H. influenzae pathogenesis. She now serves as Principal Investigator for the Georgia Emerging Infections Program (EIP), a CDC-funded surveillance network of epidemiologic and clinical research groups focused on invasive bacterial pathogens, influenza and foodborne diseases. The surveillance program, in place in Atlanta since 1988 and currently covering a population of 5.1 million in Metropolitan Atlanta, has been highly productive, providing population-based assessment of the epidemiology and risk factors for a number of important bacterial infections, including pneumococcal disease and community-associated MRSA. Other EIP projects include post-licensure vaccine effectiveness studies for influenza, Hib and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, and surveillance for Clostridium difficile infections. |
| Relevance to VA: |
Study of the epidemiology of many diseases highly relevant to the VA population including invasive infections due to S. pneumoniae, MRSA, C.difficile, influenza and foodborne diseases. Studies of vaccine effectiveness in all age groups provides data that is relevant to Veterans both because of direct vaccine effects and indirect effects from vaccine programs targeting other risk groups. |
