Description of Research: Inflammation and the inhibition of bone formation. Vitamin D. Cytokines. Skeletal health. Molecular mechanism of inflammatory inhibition of bone formation. Clinical outcomes for skeletal health.
Relevance to VA: Fractures are a morbid and costly helathcare problem. Half of hip fractures require further nursing home care, loss of mobility, loss of independence. 30% of men die within 6 months of a hip fracture. Our research identifies the mechanism of inflammation induced suppression of new bone formation (healing). Our research is applicable to osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer metastases.
